![]() Emby plays my ripped SACD and DVD Audio music in full 5.1 glory. So far, here are what I'm liking or disliking about each.Įmby Likes: I like the home screen much better than Plex. I also have a HDHomeRun for my antenna locals. FWIW I run both servers on my QNAP NAS, then use the respective apps on my Nvidia Shield Pro for access. I'm on my second paid month for Emby and Plex with the intent to pick one over the other. To summarize: neat features are that it's a given that whatever you throw at Emby it'll play it, the upcoming intro skip, the metadata handling is more in your hands when it comes to control, upcoming episodes of airing shows is shown and their air date and we've got official plugin-support as contrary to Plex which discontinued theirs. Though Plex gets points for the UI design, it does feel more like a personal Netflix than Emby, which on the Shield TV at least feels unpolished and rather basic (from what you expect from a project that's existed for quite some time now). The developers are also much more in touch with the community and respond faster beyond what you'd expect. The only thing that held me at Plex was the fact that I was uncertain that Emby was as versatile as I suspected and I didn't care to try, the intro skip was also nice (when it worked) but Emby is already working on their own. Plex is almost strictly for mainstream video, which punish niché users like myself which get our content transcoded for every small diversion from their "optimized for the majority"-server product. Well, it comes across as more down to earth than Plex, along with a product that just works and a wide range of support. I don't know if I'd call it _great_, but there's something at least (add a hyphen to the name, and whatever is after the hyphen shows as a version in a drop down you can select from), which Plex still has almost nothing to speak of. If I had started on Emby, I wouldn't bother with Plex now, but Plex+Tautulli is so nice, even if you really don't need Tautulli.Įdit: The one thing I think I most commonly run into that Emby is definitely better about is handling multiple versions. The core feature sets don't seem hugely different enough, outside user auth, to choose one of the other on basic functionality, IMO. If there was something as good as Tautulli/I could put some time into similar projects for Emby, I'd drop Plex. It kinda reminds me of commercial OS(Windows/Mac) vs Linux. Emby has more customization which is good and bad. Plex feels like it's got a touch more polish here and there, and has Tautulli (which is the other big reason for me). There's a lot of areas I consider Plex to still be better, but it's not hugely enough that Emby totally an also ran. I run both as well, the local user database was the primary, original reason for me. Even if it was just the speed of indexing a large collection, Emby was the obvious winner. It came up right away, indexed my collection right away, and in the several years I've been using it, it has never given me any problems. So I decided to give Emby a try, not sure yet if I would keep it. Also, every time this happened Plex needed to re-index my whole collection, which took days. I wasn't sure what I was failing to restore, but Plex kept coming up with no metadata. I was furious, and tried to restore it from backup, but it didn't work. It took months, but I finally had my videos and most of my music curated correctly.Īnd then Plex forgot all the metadata again, and once again I had a bare, unsorted collection. There's much too much to do it all at once, so I'd do a little bit every day over the course of months.Īnd then Plex forgot all the metadata, and I had a bare, unsorted collection again. Between that and the videos, that's a lot of stuff to curate. I haver abou 12,000 photos and my ripped CDs were enough music to play nonstop for months. I have a very large library, particularly of photos and music.
